I have a tough time embracing fall at least at the beginning and that's mainly because living in Virginia that means saying goodbye to dips in the swimming pool and long lazy days.
But I have to admit there is beauty in fall with the leaves changing colors and cooler nights best suited for roasting marshmallows with those you love. And the trees are not the only ones changing their color. I soon will launder and tuck away my lightweight and bright pieces and create new treasures for the cooler seasons ahead. Truth be told I was just checking out some plums, indigos and garnets at Mood fabrics.
In the fall I crave warmer colors and pieces that transition and layer well and will take me through to the spring. Fall is filled with a lot of fun with school in session, football games and visits to pick apples and pumpkins.
I love sewing but I want it to be practical as I enter this season. Reversible pieces are a super way for me to make the most of my sewing time and with a young family and work my time is limited --- anyone else out there with more projects than time?
This summer I've been busy designing with other busy mamas in mind and have a reversible skirt through Laela Jeyne coming out this fall. The skirt is an easy pattern for those new to sewing and a great launching point for more experienced sewist who can add trims, piping or coordinate multiple fabrics for unique looks.
My daughter selected the silk fabric and the cotton was leftover from a dress I had made myself. She wanted to add the "snowflake" embroidery on the silk side. I like that this skirt is ready for school day on one side or with a quick flip it can easily be reversed for a "fancier" look.
And depending on the weight of the fabric used it will add some extra warmth on the cooler days.
The skirt can be fastened with a button, snap or ribbon to bring out your littles personality. If your kiddos are anything like mine it's all about making each piece their own.
